The Challenge
Electrical power utilities are confronted with a variety of challenges such as aging infrastructure, budget cuts, personnel shortages, and ever increasing procedures and regulations. This all contributes to increased risk of blackouts, costly repairs, and maintenance, as well as the difficulty of providing security for remote facilities. Constantly, managers of substations, power plants and other facility managers are asked to do more with fewer resources and fewer personnel while complying with changing regulations and procedures. After meeting with Substation and Power station managers, Ascendent is offering the Phoenix camera system to provide 24/7 automated monitoring with the ability for remote control to improve monitoring capabilities, provide greater accuracy, reducing man-power requirements and increasing performance while at the same time reducing cost.

Thermal Imaging for Preventative Maintenance
Government/industry worldwide is now starting to address issues to reduce risk, improve reliability, and ensure efficient electric power delivery. Having worked closely with our integrators, utilities, and engineers to design and implement a system that can overcome the challenges faced by electrical facilities and utilities, Ascendent has developed an automated thermography camera system called the Pheonix. This system uses a highly sensitive thermogrpahy infrared camera and advanced historical metadata mining to provide intelligent 24/7 automation. The intellligent software suite utilizes prior image data to analyze and compare it with the real-time images. This establishes a temperature curve and, based on historical data, allows an operator to analyze the operational condition of the electrical equipment to schedule and predict maintenance and repair actions. This system provides true preventative maintenance, noticing the most minute temperature fluctuations during the early stages of metal fatigue and transistor failure. This allows you to do repairs before a problem occurs and ensures that systems are running at optimal efficiency.

What is Thermography Imaging?
These cameras are highly sensitive and distinguish temperature changes as minuet as 0.085°C. They are perfect combination of state-of-the-art infrared detector, DSP image processing and advanced mathematical algorithms, resulting in high-performance
and precise measurements. This, in tandem with our premeditative maintenance and software suite, gives you the ability to perform
precise analysis reporting that can be easily exported
as an excel document.

Precise Temperature Measurement
This perfect combination of state-of-the-art infrared detector, DSP image processing and advanced mathematical algorithms, resulting in high-performance and precise measurements. This, in tandem with our premeditative maintenance and software suite, gives you the ability to perform precise analysis reporting that can be easily exported as an excel document

Proactive Not Reactive
IR inspections are used in a variety of industrial and electrical maintenance called “preventative maintenance”. Preventative maintenance is the practice of regularly checking areas that are prone to failure. A component rarely just fails, often it is a long process of degradation that eventually turns into a failed component-and there are usually a number of indicators which warn that components need replacing before they fail. A system or component in the early stages of failure will give off signals (heat, vibration, ultrasonic noise etc.); unfortunately, these signs are
undetectable by standard observation. Thermal cameras are designed to pick up on these signs so you can replace a part before it becomes a liability; saving time, money and downtime. This approach is not reactive, rather it is proactive to ensure 24/7 operation and optimal efficiency.

Pan-Tilt Automated Monitoring
The Phoenix sensors are integrated on a heavy-duty pan-tilt driver that positions and moves the camera. This allows one camera to monitor large areas and effectively replace up to 50 fixed cameras, much more efficient then a hand-held unit. The Phoenix has up to 50 user-defined presets and each preset can have up
to 9 monitoring targets, this allows for up to 450 separate targets, each with their own individual alarm parameters. Tours, or automated monitoring, allows the camera to go through a list of presets that can be trigged using a timed open, fixed time interval, or manually selected.

Equipment Condition Indication and Alarm
An auto-alarm will inform you when an abnormal temperature on any equipment is detected. Equipment condition is divided into 3 levels: normal, early warning, and alarm. When a high temperature occurs, a device icon will be colored by a different temperature
alarm level.

Real-Time Monitoring and Target Analysis
Together with our intelligent software, the operator can monitor the temperature information on the target equipment in real time. Besides real time monitoring, target analysis can be done in the monitoring window by adding a target, such as a point, line, or
area. Max, min, and average temperatures can also be shown in the monitoring area.

Historical Data Analysis and Reporting
Using Ascendent professional software, a history of image data can be checked and analyzed. The temperature curve and reports output by the historical data will help the operator analyze the condition of the electrical equipment to determine when repair and maintenance is required. With our software it is easy to create customized reports, such as insertaion of logos, name of the devices, etc/ The Report Wizard guides you step-by-step in combining all IR inspection data - infrared and visual images, temperature measurements, and text notes -
into a professional word or excel report.

Gigabit Ethernet
The Phoenix is designed for absolute performance, with a built-in gigabit ethernet connection, ensuring a reliable, stable, and real-time viewing. This allows the camera to be easily installed on an existing network, or wirelessly with an optional wireless transmitter for quick, professional installations. It can be viewed and controlled over a local network, internet, or VPN connection. A traditional analog BNC output is also present for compatibility with legacy systems.

Optical Camera (Optional)

Wide Dynamic Range
The Phoenix optical camera incorporates advanced backlight compensation technology that dramatically improves dynamic range by 128 times, resulting in accurate reproduction in extreme high-contrast lighting environments. The camera captures the
same image twice; first with a normal shutter speed and then with a high shutter speed. The dark areas captured at normal shutter speed and the bright areas captured at high shutter speed are then blended into one image, using an advanced DSP LSI, producing superb images.

Automatic AE Response
The Phoenix is equipped with a slow AE response function that automatically slows the rate at which camera exposure levels change. This rate can be set up to 32 times slower than when full-auto AE or priority (shutter/iris) modes are selected. This allows for monitoring areas in which lighting conditions change abruptly. For example, if the camera is used to monitor a flow of night time traffic and vehicle headlights are pointed directly towards it, the camera’s exposure level is reduced slowly. This gives the ability to identify important details that are often overexposed by the headlights, such as the car’s license plate or the driver’s face.

Auto MICF (IR Filter)
Mechanical IR Cut Filter (MICF) delivers optimal images in both day and night shooting applications. At a set level of darkness the IR cut filter is automatically disabled (ICR ON) and the infrared sensitivity is increased. At a set level of brightness the filter is automatically enabled (ICR OFF). The IR cut filter automatically
activates depending on the ambient light allowing the capture of images in a variety of lighting conditions.

High-Resolution Images
Combining a newly developed DSP with a 1/4” EXView HAD CCD, this camera achieves a high horizontal resolution of 600TVL and outputs amazingly clear and detail-rich images with accurate color reproduction. Not only does this camera offer high resolution,
it also has a 37X 3.5mm-129.5mm optical motorized
IR corrected zoom lens with an additional 16X of digital
zoom for a total zoom of 592X.
